About the Program
Founder and program lead, Hooked on Fishing
Matthew Pickett has been fishing the waters of Acton and the surrounding New England area for over 13 years. What started as a handful of summer afternoons at NARA Park grew into a lifelong passion for the outdoors — and eventually, a desire to share that passion with his community.
Matthew founded Hooked on Fishing to give local residents of all ages a welcoming, low-pressure way to learn the basics of fishing or simply enjoy time on the water. Whether you've never held a rod or you've been casting for years, Matthew believes there's always something new to discover about the lakes, the fish, and the quiet rhythm of a morning by the pond.
Matthew's dedication to the program reflects a broader pattern of leadership and service. He serves as captain of his school's football team, where he's learned the value of discipline, communication, and looking out for teammates. As a member of student council, he's developed a track record of following through on commitments and representing his peers responsibly. As a Boy Scout working toward Eagle rank, he brings the core scouting values — trustworthiness, helpfulness, and respect for the outdoors — to every session he runs.
Parents can feel confident sending their kids to a Hooked on Fishing session knowing that Matthew treats every participant's safety, experience, and enjoyment as his personal responsibility.
